Yachts have no absolute valuation. A yacht is worth exactly the amount of money someone is willing to pay for it. So a yacht valuation is accurate only when a seller and a buyer agree on a price and a deal is made, and only for that specific buyer.
However, the market tends to balance itself: Yachts that are priced high tend to sell slowly, while yachts that are priced low are usually purchased quickly and removed from the market. This means that the asking prices (i.e., the prices quoted by the sellers) for yachts that are in the market are a bit higher than what is paid in actual deals.
Everyone has their own estimates on how big is the difference between asking prices and purchase prices. Some say it is as low as 10%, some say it is 20% or more. As there is no public registry of all yacht deals, there is no way to know. However, we are actively seeking partnerships with yacht brokers to enable us to calculate a more accurate estimation of this difference. If you want you can receive word once it is available.
The price estimates that are published here are reasonably accurate. They represent the majority of the yachts on the market, and are updated on a monthly basis to reflect market changes.
In statistical language, the prices have near-gaussian distribution with a standard deviation of about 20% of the mean price. If the standard deviation goes above 25% it is noted near the relevant table.
In plain language, when you see a price estimation for a specific model, more than two thirds of the available yachts of this model offerred on the market are priced no more than 20% above or below the estimated price.
We collect our data from a variety of sources, among which are yacht brokers, yacht search engines, brokerage sites and other publically available sources. Every month we collect the data, filter it, and eliminate duplicate listings. Then we perform statistical analysis per each manufacturer, and adapt our price estimation model for that manufacturer so it fits the actual data as closely as possible.
We estimate that our data sampling covers more than 70% of the yacht listings in the market worldwide.
